Research and be prepared to discuss: 4A, 4B. Complete 7A, 7B and 8. A nation is a patchwork of communities that differ from each other and may be governed differently. But regardless of how local communities differ, they all have one point in common: In the United States, local government means self-government. Good citizens help to make decisions about their community through their elected local officials.

Complete 3A, 3B, 7A and 7B. Scouts who earn the Citizenship in the World merit badge will discover that they are already citizens of the world. How good a world citizen each person is depends on their willingness to understand and appreciate the values, traditions, and concerns of people in other countries.

Preventing crime, which can be as simple as reducing the opportunities for crime to occur, is far less costly than apprehending and bringing legal action against those who break the law and it helps save people from the anguish of being victims.

The world is rapidly changing, making today’s society much more complex than ever before. As Scouts earn this merit badge, they will realize why it is important to know more about family life and how to strengthen their families.

Fire Safety (MB) Time Block(s): 1 (8:00AM) Available To: Youth Scouts BSA (Y) Seats Available: None **2026 LSU MBD PRE-REQUISITE(S)** Complete 5D and bring a completed permission slip. NOTE: FIREM’N CHIT card is a requirement to take this class. The ability to use fire safely is essential to human survival. By earning this merit badge, Scouts will learn to uses fire safely and responsibly, how to prevent home fires, and how to handle fire safely, as well as burn prevention, and camping safety.

Reading (MB) Time Block(s): 1 (8:00AM) Available To: Youth Scouts BSA (Y) Seats Available: 5 For LSU Merit Badge Day - Do Requirement 6 for Reading (choose one: read to a sick or blind person, read to a younger child, volunteer at a public library, organize a book swap or organize a book drive to donate books) For requirement number 3 (read 4 different kinds of books or come with a list of 4 different kinds of books already read).

Chess (MB) Time Block(s): 2 (12:30PM) Available To: Youth Scouts BSA (Y) Seats Available: 1 **2026 LSU MBD PRE-REQUISITE(S)** Bring a chess board. The USCF (United States Chess Federation) provided the primary contributing writers for the Merit Badge pamphlet. They will be helping to promote the badge through communications with the Chess delegate teams (similar to BSA’s National Committees and Boards) and e-mail blasts, plus website and “tournament news” announcements.

As Scouts fulfill the requirements for this merit badge, they will learn how to become active citizens are aware of and grateful for their liberties and rights, to participate in their governments and protect their freedom, helping to defend their country and standing up for individual rights on behalf of all its citizens.

Communication (MB) Time Block(s): 2 (12:30PM) Available To: Youth Scouts BSA (Y) Seats Available: 1 **2026 LSU MBD PRE-REQUISITE(S)** Be prepared to discuss the following: 2A or 2B, 3, 4, 5, 6 (BRING MATERIALS NEEDED TO TEACH YOUR SKILL), 8 (BRING DOCUMENTATION FROM SCOUT LEADER IF YOU HAVE DONE THIS REQUIREMENT), and 9. This clear and concise definition comes from the U.S. Department of Education: "Communication focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, cultures, channels, and media. The field of communication promotes the effective and ethical practice of human communication.

First Aid (MB) Time Block(s): 2 (12:30PM) Available To: Youth Scouts BSA (Y) Seats Available: 5 First aid — caring for injured or ill persons until they can receive professional medical care — is an important skill for every Scout. With some knowledge of first aid, a Scout can provide immediate care and help to someone who is hurt or who becomes ill. First aid can help prevent infection and serious loss of blood. It could even save a limb or a life.

Genealogy (MB) Time Block(s): 2 (12:30PM) Available To: Youth Scouts BSA (Y) Seats Available: 1 **2026 LSU MBD PRE-REQUISITE(S)** Bring pen & paper to class; complete 2A and 3; and write down and bring in 3 generations of family; include their name, date of birth, and date of death. Discovering your ancestors back through history is what genealogy is all about.

Education, training, and experience all help make your goals become a reality. To achieve your goals, you will choose the best path and make a commitment to it, while remaining flexible enough to deal with changes and new opportunities. 2025 MBD PREREQUISITE: (1) MINIMUM AGE IS 13. (2) OBTAIN SCOUTMASTER APPROVAL TO TAKE MERIT BADGE. (3) REVIEW 2025 REQUIREMENTS. (4) THIS MERIT BADGE CAN ONLY BE PARTIALLY COMPLETED.
